He’s only human, and yet there’s a sense of excitement and inner restlessness when you know you’re going to meet him\u2026 meet him in person. For as long as I can remember, he’s been a part of my life. I grew up with all his films \u2014 whether it was They Called Him Bulldozer<\/em>, Buddy Goes West<\/em>, Flatfoot<\/em>, Go for It<\/em>, or Who Finds a Friend Finds a Treasure<\/em>. He made 16 films together with his best buddy Terence Hill, forming a powerful and hugely successful duo.<\/p>\n

On March 28, 2012, I had the honor of meeting Bud Spencer in person during a press conference held to mark the release of the second part of his autobiography \u201cAround the World in Eighty Years.\u201d<\/em> He was the hero of my childhood, the inventor of the legendary \u201csteam hammer\u201d punch\u2014a classic fist blow to the head\u2014and the man who considered beans a complete meal.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank publisher Oliver Schwarzkopf (Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf) for the invitation to this small and rather intimate press event. The press conference was scheduled for 11 a.m., and with only a two-minute delay, the doors to the conference room finally opened for us journalists, who had already been waiting in the anteroom for quite some time.<\/p>\n

And then suddenly, he stood right there in front of us\u2014an icon we had known for decades only from television or, in our younger years, even from cinema visits.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Now 83 years old, he may have visually transformed into a lovable grandpa, but the power of his presence hadn\u2019t diminished one bit for me.<\/p>\n

Instantly, my mind started playing movie scenes, and I saw him again in all his legendary roles\u2014whether as the peace-loving police inspector \u201cManuele Rizzo,\u201d better known as Flatfoot, or as the fake doctor in Buddy Goes West<\/em>, dishing out one-liners like no other.<\/p>\n

Buddy, playing the Doc, examines his first patient\u2014and his appetite is already in full swing.<\/p>\n

Woman:<\/strong> \u201cIt always gets worse after eating, Doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buddy:<\/strong> \u201cWell, at least he\u2019s eating. \u2014 What does he usually have?\u201d<\/p>\n

Son:<\/strong> \u201cHardly anything, really. My old man\u2019s not the youngest anymore, Doctor. And for about a year now, he only eats easily digestible stuff in the evenings\u2014maybe a few smoked sausages, some pork rind with bacon, a few rich beans, then a slice of mutton, some roast pork with chili peppers, and a handful of raw onions and garlic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buddy:<\/strong> \u201cHmm\u2026 maybe it\u2019s the pork rind in the beans.\u201d<\/p>\n
