After more than three years, I’m heading back to the USA. In fact, it’s kind of an anniversary trip—my tenth visit since 1994. And I can’t deny it: this country feels like a second home to me. I just love the “Stars and Stripes” and the “American Way of Life.” Traveling is my passion, and when the pandemic hit, international travel came to a near standstill. Countries completely closed their borders or could only be entered with significant effort and long quarantine periods.

After my trip to Puerto Rico in November/December 2019, my first long-distance journey wasn’t possible again until November 2021—this time to beautiful Thailand for three weeks. Back then, Thailand was one of the few long-haul destinations you could enter without a lengthy quarantine. But preparing for that trip was hell, and up until the end of October, we didn’t even know if the trip would actually happen. Only in November was the Thailand Pass introduced, which reduced the 14-day quarantine to just one night—provided the PCR test in Bangkok came back negative. Thankfully, mine did, and nothing stood in the way of our adventure. Looking back, the trip was an absolute dream—especially because of the person who accompanied me. Someone who will always be important to me.

That trip to Thailand reignited the spark in me. Anyone who shares my love for travel knows this feeling—that inner urge to go far away. Like having ants in your pants. Sitting still just isn’t an option. And so the next destination has to be one that promises new stories to remember. After such a long travel drought during COVID, I honestly didn’t care whether I was revisiting a place or discovering it for the first time. Back in 2015, I was already on a three-week road trip through the western USA with an awesome crew—Insa, Kati, and Guido. You can see the results of that trip here:

And this destination was calling me once again — especially because I know how incredible my memories of that trip still are. I made myself one promise: to plan the second time completely differently and make up for what I missed back then.

This time, I’ll be accompanied by a good friend who has never left Europe before — and therefore never been to the United States. And just between us: anyone who’s already experienced the USA, especially the American West, knows exactly what’s in store for her. Her brain will practically explode with the sheer volume of breathtaking impressions. 😊 I can’t wait to watch her take it all in and fall in love with the U.S.

But back to the plan: 3.5 weeks exploring the American West.

That’s the trip!

Day 1
The Arrival

On September 1st, we’ll head out in the morning from Düsseldorf, flying with Air France via Paris to California — to the City of Angels: Los Angeles! Since it’s hard to predict how long immigration and the car rental process will take, I’ve booked our first night at a hotel not far from the airport. This national park is famous for its red rock spires called Hoodoos. And there’s a reason we’re coming so early—the park’s most iconic viewpoints are called Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Inspiration Point, and Bryce Point, after all. We’ll spend the first half of the day exploring the park and doing some light hiking. Then we’ll head to our next destination, about 200 km away, where we’ll stay for two nights: Hurricane. Due to the massive increase in visitors over the past years—and the fact that since 2000, 14 people have died on the Angels Landing Trail—this step was unfortunately necessary. Hopefully, we’ll be able to snag a permit. I’m optimistic, since September is no longer peak season. Armed with waterproof shoes and a walking stick, we’ll wade through the river and take in the awe-inspiring scenery.
