Mister UniQue was back on tour – and this time, I found myself in the capital of Klaus Wowereit: Berlin.
On October 4th, 2012, I flew to Berlin-Tegel in the late morning and was briefly greeted by dry weather – just long enough for a false sense of security – before the wrath of the heavens descended upon me. For four days straight, I was plagued by unrelenting rain, the kind that made you look around for Noah and his ark every time you dared step outside. In short: the weather was absolutely miserable. To be honest – the rain didn’t stop until I left on October 7th.
Still, it was a successful trip. Why? Because I had the chance to meet and interview two celebrities who couldn’t be more different. First: Germany’s most famous hairdresser – Udo Walz. And four days later: Germany’s most controversial (and most naked) self-promoter – Micaela Schäfer. Her video interview will follow soon.
But let’s rewind: After landing in Berlin, I went straight to my hotel. Quick check-in. No time to waste – I had an appointment at 2:30 PM with Udo Walz at his salon on Uhlandstraße 181/183, near Ku’damm. I arrived a little early, hoping that might earn me some extra time, since I’d only been officially granted 30 minutes for the interview.
So there I stood. In front of the glass door to Udo Walz’s salon. Peering in, I immediately recognized that familiar face walking straight toward me. I’ll admit – I was nervous. I stepped inside, and Udo greeted me in a rather disinterested tone:
“How can I help you?”
I replied, “My name is Oliver Dohmen, and I have an interview appointment with you.”
He shot back, “I know nothing about that! Where are you from? What media are you with?”
What I didn’t realize at that moment was that he was simply testing me – trying to catch me off guard. Udo is a master of dry humor and loves to play mind games to throw people off balance. It was all just a joke.
It didn’t take long before we clicked, and the result was a relaxed, easygoing interview. Since then, we’ve been on a first-name basis, and he even promised to connect me with countless other celebrities through his network.
